Masai X FSC®

Masai is the first fashion brand in the world to be FSC-certified (FSC® C152037). We care about the world's forests and climate, we believe it's important to know where the wood fibres come from that we use for our viscose, and with our FSC-certification we now know.

But are our clothes really made of wood?

Yes! We can create gorgeous textile fabrics, such as viscose, from the cellulose fibres in the wood. Up to 60% of Masai’s collections are made of wood-based fibres like viscose, which is why we have worked purposefully towards attaining an FSC certification.

But isn’t it bad for the environment to cut down trees?

It CAN be, but it doesn’t need to be. The FSC-certificate ensures that the wood fibres come from sustainable forests, which respect the surrounding nature, animals and people, and from other controlled sources. The FSC-certification is recommended by several international organisations, such as WWF and Forests of the World. That’s why we have chosen FSC-certified fibres for our textiles.

5 good reasons for choosing FSC®
1. WITH FSC, WE TAKE CARE OF THE FORESTS, THE PEOPLE AND THE ANIMALS WHO LIVE IN THEM

We know that in an FSC-forest, the forest area will remain the same for generations to come.

Rare and endangered species and their habitats are protected

Parts of the forest are completely preserved to protect and encourage biodiversity

Natural streams, wetlands and banks are protected and restored, and the forest owner has to manage the water quality.

Indigenous people's rights have to be respected and the forest owner has to contribute financially to local projects (such as access to medical help, clean water etc.)

Forest workers have to be trained and have proper safety equipment, pay and working conditions.

FSC wood is legally felled and traded under normal market conditions.

2. MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

With FSC-certified products, we are sending out a clear message that we take a social and environmental responsibility for the world's forests. FSC and FSC-certified products also contribute to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable development. FSC supports 14 of the 17 goals - also known as the SDGs. For example, FSC supports goal 12 for responsible production and consumption, and to goal 15 for life on land.

3. INDEPENDENT THIRD-PARTY DOCUMENTATION

FSC is the most solid and reliable documentation and guarantee of legal and sustainable wood. This means that with FSC-certified products, we can provide documentation that meets requirements in timber legislation, certification schemes etc.

4. THE STRONGEST SUPPORT

FSC is widely supported by economic, social and environmental stakeholders. FSC is also supported by internationally recognised NGOs, such as the World Wide Fund for Nature, the Forests of the World and Save the Orangutan. And finally, FSC is recommended by the Danish consumer council TÆNK.

5. GLOBAL IMPACT

Regardless of where in the world the wood fibres come from, we give our support by choosing FSC-certified products and FSC as an organisation. FSC is present in 123 countries and has more certificates than any other certification scheme for responsible forestry. FSC works strategically with governments, NGOs and companies all over the world to promote sustainable use of the world's forests.

Masai X Canopy

In June 2019, Masai established a partnership with Canopy, a not-for-profit environmental organization dedicated to protecting forests, species and climate.

Canopy collaborates with more than 750 companies to develop innovative solutions, make their supply chains more sustainable and help protect our world’s remaining ancient and endangered forests.

As a Canopy partner, Masai have strengthened our commitment to protect the world’s forests through our approach to procurement of both fabrics for our collections but also paper articles and packaging. Masai will work together with Canopy and our suppliers to support collaborative and visionary solutions that protect the world’s forests and in particular remaining ancient and endangered forest.
